Friday House Sports

The students in Room 5 were able to show their leadership skills during Friday's house sports events.  The house leaders and deputies set-up and ran a variety of games and activities, while the other Room 5 leaders took their houses from one activity to another.

It was great to see the older students caring for, helping, and encouraging the younger ones.  This highlighted the school's commitment towards developing a sense of unity across the age groups.

Booktown Boogies Down

As predicted, most of the final week of Term Three was focused on practicing, preparing for, and performing our production "Booktown Boogies Down".

The students all worked really hard to ensure everything was in place for the production, and that nothing was forgotten.  At both the matinee and the evening show, the students performed their very best and did exceptionally well - so well, in fact, that Mrs Muth received several cards and emails congratulating the school and the students on such a successful production.  Well done everyone.

This production (written by our very own, talented production writer Carrie Watson), was inspired by Featherston being named New Zealand's first "Booktown", gaining membership to the International Organisation of Booktowns.  This is a great achievement for Featherston, as membership is only awarded to small rural towns or villages, in which there is a large concentration of second-hand and antiquarian bookshops.  Most Booktowns have developed in places of historical interest or scenic beauty - which Featherston has an abundance of.

Week 9 and the Production

As predicted, Week Nine saw us busily practicing and preparing for the Booktown Boogies Down production.  Our class item has come together nicely, with an amazing effort put in by all, to learn and perform the dance.

While learning our show item, the students have been able to demonstrate their knowledge of Dance Elements, such as Action, Space, Time and Energy, in the context of performance dance.

Our costumes, as the villains of Booktown, looked amazing at the dress rehearsal on Friday.  A special thanks to all of the parents for helping gather and make the items needed for these.

Next week will also be full of production practices, with the final polishing of a few vital items before the shows on Wednesday and Thursday.  What a very busy last week of the term it will be.

Hockey Tournament

On Tuesday, in the beautiful sunshine and 20 degree heat, a group Year 7 and 8 students competed in the South Wairarapa Hockey Tournament at Clareville.  They were fierce competitors and displayed great teamwork and tremendous sportsmanship.

Our team showed off their fantastic passing skills in the nil all draw against South End School in their first game.  They then played hard against Pirinoa, with an unlucky last minute ricochet ending the game with a 1-2 loss.  The game against Greytown School was amazing, with the St Teresa's team frustrating their strikers and winning by two goals to nil.

In the finals, our team played for third place against Martinborough School.  This was the toughest game yet.  Martinborough had a couple of very strong hockey players in their midst who were able to break through our defenses.  The final result was a 0-3 loss, and a bump on the head for one of our players.

All in all, our team was happy with their overall fourth placing in the competition, and I was very impressed by the behaviour and determination of our team.  Well done!

This was yet another way that the students at St Teresa's School were able to show, and further develop, their talents and skills in areas outside the classroom environment.

Woodworking Extension

An important part of the Year 7 and 8 programme at St Teresa's School, is the enrichment opportunities we are able to offer the students.  We are always looking for external opportunities where students can further develop a particular skill/talent in their areas of interest.

Based on the work they have done during the term, Luke and Noah were selected by their technology teachers to take part in a woodworking extension programme earlier in the week.  The brief was to design and make something by upcycling a wooden pallet.

Both boys really enjoyed this opportunity, and were proud of what they made.

What fun in week 8!

This week has been a lot of fun mixed in with a lot of learning.

Firstly, our production dance is coming along nicely.  The Room 5 students have been working really hard to learn and memorise the tricky steps that make up their dance.  They have been developing and refining their knowledge of rhythm and timing, along with further developing their knowledge of performance dance.

In maths, we have been learning how to work with fractions, switching between improper and mixed number fractions, and adding and subtracting common and uncommon denominator fractions.  We will continue to build on this learning next week.

During our writing time earlier in the week, we wrote articles for the newsletter about the fantastic events of the week before (Dance Splash, the All Blacks visit to Greytown, and the Jazz Music Concert).  Noah's, Mei's and Willie's articles were chosen to be published in the newsletter.  In writing these articles, the students had to match their language and structure to the purpose of their writing, while considering how much information to include.  They also had to write these  articles succinctly so they would fit in the newsletter.

On Thursday, the students in Room 5 turned their newsletter articles, into news reports, suitable to be read on the evening news.  To do this, the students had to firstly consider the difference in the language that each piece of writing would need, then consider how much of the original information would be used in the news report.

Once written, the students were then required to read their "news" in front of the camera and a "live studio audience".  This task was met with varying amounts of nerves, but fairly equal amounts of enthusiasm.

Knowing how to write for a specific purpose is an important skill that students need to have in Year 7 and 8 - as is speaking in front of others.  While writing and creating these news reports, the students were learning how to present and structure their ideas to meet a given purpose; create content that is relevant to the specific learning task by including only carefully selected detail; and to select and use language that is appropriate to the topic, audience, and purpose.

They all did very well and enjoyed creating something different.

Technologically Awesome!

Finally Room 5 got back down to technology to continue cooking up a storm, and crafting their stools.

Thank You drivers!

Students in Room 5 had the opportunity to take part in a speed trial exercise with Holly from the Wairarapa Road Safety Council.  She brought with her a speed gun radar, similar to those used by the police, and showed the students how to use it, and how it can be used to gather speed data.

The students used the speed gun radar to test the speed of the cars driving past our school between 11:30am and 12:30pm on Monday 24th August.

Out of the 41 cars tested, most were travelling below the speed limit, with only three vehicles travelling above by 1 km/h.  The average speed was a fantastic 39km/h.  Well done drivers!  It was great to see the amount of respect these drivers have for the speed limit in our area.

Taking part in this exercise enabled the students to practice skills they have been learning in mathematics, and apply them to a real-life situation using real data.  Students were able to calculate the average speed, use their BEDMAS knowledge to calculate the vehicle's stopping distance, and create graphs to show their data.

Taking Part

The last few weeks have been very busy, with many opportunities for the students in room 5 to extend their knowledge and try new things.

The Year 8's tried something new when they attended the Kuranui College Open day.  They had the opportunity to have a good look around the college and meet some of the other students who will be in their year group.

The Matharapa competition saw six students from Room 5, compete against teams from other schools around the Wairarapa.  Two teams of three (a Year 7 team, and a Year 8 team) competed well and represented our school with pride.

A large group of Room 5 students also took part in the Football Tournament, held at Carrington Park in Carterton.  Our two teams were fierce but fair competitors, as they played in the social grade against other schools from around Carterton and the South Wairarapa.  I was really impressed by the way both teams gelled together, and played positively.  Everyone was supported and encouraged to play their absolute best.  Although it was a long and tiring day, they gave it their all right to the very end.

With the hockey tournament coming up on the 15th of September, the skills lessons with Sharon have been invaluable.  Passing the ball with accuracy, and trapping, are all skills that will help them in tournament games.
