“Standing Tall Together”
Camp Anderson, Riversdale, March 2-4

Camp was a fantastic beginning to a new year in
Room 5.
Students were challenged physically and emotionally and were required to work as individuals, in small groups and as a class group.

The theme “Standing Tall Together” encourages students to build on and strengthen their relationships with each other as a group.  They will also celebrate the individual strengths they each bring to camp and celebrate the milestones and achievements they will make as camp progresses.

As I lie in the trench............................

As part of our Inquiry learning, students were set the task of describing what soliders would see, hear and feel in the trenches.  Here are the amazing pieces of writing.

LIFE IN THE TRENCHES

As I lie in the trench I can feel the cold howling wind rushing into my back and the wet, soft, squelching, muddy water soaking through my long, green, camo pants.  I feel the air of the bombs rush into my wet, soggy body.  I feel my heartbeat going insanely fast as the bombing planes drive by.
As I lie in the trench I can see the enemy artillery firing their cold silver cannon balls at our trench.  I can see the big enemy planes flying fast across the dark cloudy sky.  I can see the allies falling into the cold, brown, squishy mud.  As they fall I see them firing at my team mates but their bronze looking bullets don’t hit me.
As I lie in the trench I can hear the ear bursting whistling sound of the bombs dropping.  I can hear the war cries of the men fighting.  I can hear the loud gunfire of war.
Nate

As I lie in the trench I see blood and mud dripping down the trench walls and dirt exploding over my head from the massive artillery.  I stare as my team mate drops to the muddy sloppy floor.
Luke

As I lie in the trench I can see ginormous rats scuttling around the food shelter, searching for scraps left behind after lunch, but there are none.  The pine wood planks and hard sand bags are too strong for them to nibble through, which is why they search and forage for food.  Gas masks are thrown about on the dirt floor with pools of dark mud forming in the corners.  The cold silver weapons are banging above the top of the trench, piles of ammo waiting to be used.  As the soldiers come off duty they receive the new leather boots and hand knitted woolen socks from other countries.
As I lie in the trench I hear the sound of a war plane, is it an enemy or an Allie?  I have the sudden urge to hide, or run, but I don’t because I know I can’t.  BOOM!  the sound of a bomb exploding further along the trench reaches my ears.  Enemy, running feet along the trench is doused by the sound of icky, sticky, gooey mud.  I hear a scream in the distance, and then crying.
Julia

As I lie in the trench I can see injured people laying everywhere screaming and shouting in pain, ammo sinking in the mud, at least three thousand battle shells.
As I lie in the trench I can hear gunshots firing at the enemies, and tanks rolling closer and closer.  Crunch! as it rolls over the sharp, pointy spikes.
As I lie in the trench I feel scared.  Will I ever make it home to my family, I feel horrible for the people I have killed and their families.  It’s like I’m living a nightmare. Why? why me?
As I lie in the trench, I can see the stone cold metal of the weapons shining in the sun.  I see tears building up in my friends weeping eyes.
As I lie in the trench, I hear the horrifying screams of dying people, and the crunching of tanks rolling over the dead bodies of my friends.
Hannah

As I lie in the trench I can see mud splashing all over the place.  Injured people, wood being dropped, rats running all over the place, my allies just lying there in pain.
As I lie in the trench I can hear bombs going off right next to the trench.  I hear shouting, screaming people everywhere.  They sound like they are dying in a horrible way.
I lie there waiting to get up and run.  I am waiting for the signal.  It is boring, very depressing, as squishy muds splatters all over me. It feels like I am going as deaf as a piece of paper.  I am scared because I can hear my team mates screaming to their death.
Grace

As I lie in the trench I can see dead people just lying there and rodents, rats and lots of mud and water all lying beside me.  I see ammo, vomit and sand bags to give people shelter, and enemies with weapons and nurses with patients.
As I lie in the trench I can hear bombs screaming, army tanks and shouting as people are running.  I hear people dying in pain and I hear cannons firing and the triggers of guns going off.  I hear the squishing of people, it sounds like a dying goat, as people die in pain.
As I lie in the trench I feel proud but scared of what’s going to happen next.  I feel horrible and depressed and bored.  It feels like everyone around me is getting shot down by the minute.  It feels like everyone’s hunger is growing bigger because we are not actually eating real food.
As I lie in the ice cold trench I see water dripping from the roof, making an echoing sound, while I lie there waiting for someone to call me out to fight for my life, and my country.  Then, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.  No, no, it was just a torch.
Ella

As I lie in the trench I can see puddles of blood, drowning the bullets.  I can see tanks overpowered with flames, the steel burning black, the green slowly fading, dead bodies lying next to them.
As I lie in the trench I feel scared.  My heart is pumping, my blood is rushing through my veins, not knowing what will happen next.  I am traumatised.
As I lie in the trench I can hear pain, I head blasts of cannons, bang, guns shooting the enemy, the sounds of people dying in pain, lying there motionless.  There is an ear blasting sound from the bombs dropping from the planes.
As I lie in the trench I can smell the strong smoke coming from explosions.  I can smell food in the trench that has been knocked over.  I can smell the mud, the squishy, sloppy, gooey mud.
Rhys

As I lie in the trench I can see the dirt, it’s bone dry.  I try my best not to scrape my hands as I fire my rifle.  It hurts when I lay on the concrete, hard dirt that is slowly turning into mud.  Puddles of blood form around all the dead people.
Hunter

As I lie in the trench I can see all the dead people lying there, their blood splattered everywhere, with bruises the size of potatoes where they were shot.  I can’t stop thinking that that may soon be me.
As I lie in the trench I can hear the gun fire.  I hear the ones that hit people, and the way their screams ring out.
Willie

As I hide away from the planes swooping and swirling over my rock hard helmet, I can see fear in my friends eyes.
As I lie in the cold dark surrounded trench, I can hear the sounds of men crying, people dying and all the horror around me.  I can feel my heart pumping as I race through my trench I can feel lots of emotions going through my body.
Breea

As I lie in the dark wet muddy uncomfortable unsafe and scarey trench, I can see dead people, boards, mouldy food and the shells of the machine.
As I lie in the dark wet muddy, boarded, heavily sand bagged trench, I can see dead people bleeding out, and jaggered bones sticking out of people.
Caleb

As I lie in the trench I can see the thick mud and I hear bombs and yelling outside and I feel a stone fall on my back.  I feel the cold air down my neck.  I see a few rats run through the trench.  I hear more bombs being fired and shouting.  I see a rat bouncing down the trench to find food.  I look up and see a plane fly over the trench.  I hear bombs being dropped again.
As I lie in the trench I hear the other injured soldiers screaming in pain behind me, in the dirty stoney cold muddy side of the trench.  I hear bombs being fired with a loud booming noise.
Rose

As I lie in the trench I can see bullets piercing through men’s heads and men falling to the wet solid ground.
As I lie in the trench I can hear the screaming of the dying and injured.  I hear Allies carrying the dead through the cramped, muddy trenches.  I can hear cannon fire bearly missing me and gun fire hitting my allies, injuring some, but killing most.
As I lie in the trench, I feel heart struck bombs, guns killing mates and feeling horrible about what I have to get these men killed.
Ashton

As I lie in the trench I can see the bombs dropping out of the enemy plane in my mates eyes.  I cover my head praying I will see my family again.  BOOM!  I’m looking at the light, it’s bright and I hear guns shoot again, the light has gone and I am alive.
As I lie in the trench, I can hear the sound of my own scream as the medics look at my torn apart leg, there is flesh everywhere.  I see my cousins head beside me and I pass out.
I wake up in the hospital a nurse brings me breakfast.  Later on I get a lot of letters – here is my favourite:
Dear Larry
I’ve been looking after the house for you.  I’m having trouble looking after Jess, it’s hard, I think she misses you.
From Mum
“I feel like I’m going home” I say to myself.
I go to sleep hoping that I’ll have a better day but I have a bad dream and I wake up sweating.  The next day I getting sent home and I will see my wife and kids again.
Brian

As I lie in the cold muddy trench, bandaging up the slice in my knee, I was wondering if I could run with this wound, but the Commander broke my train of thought with his almighty yell to tell us to load up the cannon.
I can see the blood running down my leg into the cold dense mud.  I look out and see the bullet shells getting devoured by the glunky mud.
I look into my friends soulless eyes and I load another pitch black bomb into the cannon and see the enemy planes.  My muscles start to tense and my wound starts seeping.
Rosemary

As I hide I see people shouting in pain.  I’m soaked, covered in mud and my dear friends are all tired and scared (I just wanna go home!)
As the bombs explode I take cover I see the warm sun rising into my face as the smoke covers the sun, it feels very cold.
As I slipped, I saw huge explosions as I lay on the cold wet mud I hear people yelling at me to get up.  I can hear screaming and yelling.  The place starts to get hot.  My socks are very cold, I can hardly walk.
